A Perfect Weekend in North Charleston, SC: Your 48-Hour Itinerary
North Charleston has transformed from a naval base town into one of the most dynamic cities in the Southeast. As South Carolina's third-largest city, it combines genuine Lowcountry charm with Boeing-scale ambition — and a weekend here reveals why locals are fiercely proud. Here's the perfect 48 hours.
Saturday Morning: Park Circle
Start in Park Circle, North Charleston's creative heart. This historic neighborhood centers on a rare circular park design, surrounded by bungalows that now house artist studios, coffee shops, and some of the best restaurants in the Lowcountry. Grab breakfast at EVO Pizzeria (their weekend brunch is exceptional — try the breakfast pizza with local eggs and Benton's bacon) or keep it casual at The Orange Spot Coffee for locally roasted pour-overs. Walk the circle itself — the park features a disc golf course, playground, and community garden.
Saturday Late Morning: Riverfront Park
Head to Riverfront Park on the Cooper River. This 10-acre park is built on the site of the old Charleston Naval Base and features a gorgeous boardwalk, an iconic red pedestrian bridge, and views across the river to the Charleston peninsula. Walk the pier to see the old naval hospital in the distance, then explore the Greater Charleston Naval Base Memorial honoring those who served during its 95-year history.
Saturday Afternoon: H.L. Hunley Submarine
The Warren Lasch Conservation Center houses the H.L. Hunley, the world's first successful combat submarine. This Confederate sub sank the USS Housatonic in 1864 before mysteriously disappearing — and was only recovered in 2000. The guided tour takes you through the incredible conservation efforts and fascinating forensic archaeology of the crew. Tours available Saturdays, advance tickets required ($18 adults). It's one of the most unique museum experiences in the Southeast.
Saturday Evening: Park Circle Dining
Jackrabbit Filly serves heritage-driven Chinese-American cuisine that earned national acclaim. The twice-cooked pork belly and seasonal vegetable dishes are standout. The Codfather serves some of the best fish and chips south of the Mason-Dixon. Cap the evening at Holy City Brewing — an enormous brewery and taproom with a sprawling outdoor deck, live music on weekends, and views of the Noisette Creek marsh.
Sunday Morning: Lowcountry Brunch
Brunch at Madra Rua Irish Pub in Park Circle — the full Irish breakfast and Bloody Marys are excellent, and the patio is dog-friendly. Walk the neighborhood, browse the Park Circle Gallery, and explore the artist studios along Montague Avenue.
Sunday Afternoon: Coliseum, Shopping, and Departure
The North Charleston Coliseum and Performing Arts Center complex hosts everything from Stingrays hockey to Broadway tours. Check the events calendar — there's almost always something happening. For shopping, Tanger Outlets offers over 90 brand-name stores. Grab a final bite at Philly's Cheesesteaks on Rivers Avenue — a local institution for decades. With Charleston International Airport just minutes away, you can time your departure perfectly.
