The Ultimate Guide to North Charleston's Craft Brewery Scene

NNorth Charleston Guide·June 1, 2026·2 min read·👁 15 views
Explore North Charleston's booming craft brewery scene — from Holy City Brewing to Commonhouse Aleworks and hidden taproom gems in Park Circle.

Charleston has quietly become one of the Southeast's premier craft beer destinations, and North Charleston is at the center of it. The abundance of former warehouse space — many in converted naval buildings — has proven perfect for breweries. Here's where to drink.

Holy City Brewing

The undisputed king of North Charleston beer. Holy City Brewing occupies a massive waterfront facility on the former Navy Base with a sprawling outdoor deck overlooking the Noisette Creek marsh. Year-round lineup includes Pluff Mud Porter (named for the distinctive Lowcountry marsh smell) and Washout Wheat, but the rotating seasonals and barrel-aged offerings are the real stars. The kitchen serves an excellent gastropub menu — smoked chicken wings and fried green tomato BLT are essential. Live music on weekends, dog-friendly, family-friendly.

Commonhouse Aleworks

Located in Park Circle, Commonhouse Aleworks is a community-focused brewery where a portion of every pint sold goes to local charities. The Park Circle Pale Ale and Wise One Hefeweizen are constants, and the spacious taproom with garage doors opening to the street creates indoor-outdoor flow that works year-round. Trivia nights, oyster roasts in winter, and a steady rotation of food trucks keep things lively.

COAST Brewing Company

One of Charleston's OG craft breweries since 2007. Their 32/50 Kölsch is a local legend — crisp, clean, and dangerously drinkable in Lowcountry heat. The taproom on the old Navy Base is no-frills but welcoming, with corn hole and often a food truck. COAST's commitment to sustainability (solar-powered brewing) adds extra appeal.

Frothy Beard Brewing

Known for creative flavors, Frothy Beard brews everything from classic IPAs to a mango habanero ale that actually works. The taproom feels like an artist's loft with board games, trivia nights, and a pizza kitchen on-site. Their rotating sour program is one of the best in Charleston. A bit off the beaten path but well worth finding.
